Official presentation of ”1 DECEMBRIE 1918” University of Alba Iulia, Romania:

As a public higher education institution, “1 DECEMBRIE 1918” UNIVERSITY OF ALBA IULIA (UAB) is going through a new stage of its existence, a stage marked by three principles: performance, quality and consistency. Being a relatively young University – the academic community celebrates 25 years of existence in 2016 –, „1 Decembrie 1918” University of Alba Iulia is fully aware of its purpose and role within the higher education system in Romania, and constantly relates to the tradition of the Transylvanian educational system.
Its name is related to the historical moment (1918) when the union of the three Romanian provinces was accomplished in Alba Iulia. In 2009, following to the institutional assessment carried out by the Executive Bureau of the Romanian Agency for Quality Assurance in Higher Education – ARACIS, “1 Decembrie 1918” University of Alba Iulia was awarded a HIGHER CONFIDENCE RATING.
MISSION
The aim of the university is to constantly develop an academic community, able to enhance the value of the archaeological, social, economic and cultural heritage of the region, and create new and auspicious conditions for the students interested in scientific accomplishment and academic performance.
Each detail of the institutional activity is connected to the importance of the University in the heart of Romania, a privileged locus of the national spirit. The basic mission of “1 Decembrie 1918” University of Alba Iulia is precisely that of contributing through specific means of education, research and value creation to preserving and underpinning the national identity, to unity in diversity of the Romanian culture and to its active integration within the European and universal flow of values, especially those related to the surrounded European regions.

THE UNIVERSITY IN THE HISTORICAL CITY OF ALBA IULIA
„1 Decembrie 1918” University of Alba Iulia is located in the middle of Alba Carolina Fortress, the most representative of Vauban type in Europe. The Fortress was built between 1714 and 1738 and it was designed by the Italian architect Giovanni Morando Visconti. The main buildings of the University are located near the Reunification Cathedral and The National Museum of Unification, close to The Route of the Three Fortifications.
The Rectorate is located in Apor Palace, one of the significant civil buildings of the medieval and modern citadel of Alba Iulia, the first Baroque presence in the Transylvanian area. The palace augments the rich architectural heritage composed of Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance works, which were erected here while Alba Iulia citadel was the capital of the Principality of Transylvania.

STRUCTURE, EDUCATIONAL AND RESEARCH ACTIVITY
„1 Decembrie 1918” University of Alba Iulia is committed to continuing the process of extending, modernising and adapting its research and education facilities, and in developing a complex – both theoretical and practical – academic training system for all those who are willing to become highly qualified specialists in different fields of activity. Therefore, we are permanently improving our undergraduate BA and BSc programmes, as well as post-graduate studies (Master and Ph.D. programmes). The academic programmes are aligned with the Bologna system. „1 Decembrie 1918” University of Alba Iulia promotes excellence in scientific research, by developing and strengthening academic relations at national and international level, supporting individual excellence of teaching staff and researchers, increasing the quality of students’ life and creating opportunities for personal and professional development in order to help them actively integrate in society, promoting an efficient institutional management, developing and updating material resources, providing and diversifying financial resources. The new stage of maturity aims at intensifying these actions, having as main purpose the increase of every category of performances.
The University develops intensive collaboration with institutions from the secondary and higher educational systems from Romania and abroad, viable and constructive partnerships with public and private institutions and the enthusiastic support of local and regional officials.
“1 Decembrie 1918” University of Alba Iulia has now 5 Faculties – Faculty of History and Philology, Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Engineering and Exact Sciences, Faculty of Law and Social Sciences, Faculty of Orthodox Theology –, academic departments, 20 research structures and centres, about 4,500 students enrolled at two types of courses: full time and distance learning, for all the three cycles – Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral.
